When we pulled into the parking lot of the Castle, Coach Tanner announced that we would find envelopes in our rooms, letting us know if we had survived the first week.

“Good luck,” I said to Alejandro and the others, but even my Costa Rican friend’s smile seemed forced.

“I can’t wait until the morning to find out who made it,” Oliver said. “That’s torture. Text me as soon as you know.” He was bouncing on the balls of his feet, his freckled face bright with anticipation.

As we parted, I felt almost as much worry for my friends as I did for myself. It would be hard not to see a single one of them around anymore, especially Alejandro.

When I entered the room, Robbie was sitting on his bed with an open envelope and a big smile on his face. I didn’t need to ask if he had made the cut. “Yours is on the desk,” he said. “They were under the door when I came in. Listen, I’m going to the break room to meet some of the guys. Come down if you want.”

“Sure. Okay.”

“Hey Leo . . . good luck.”

“Thanks.”

As soon as he left the room, I hurried to the desk and picked up the sealed envelope with my name on it. I tore open the envelope and took out a slip of white paper. With trembling hands, I read the handwritten message from our squad leader.

Congratulations Leo! You made the First Cut.

I sat on my bed and held the piece of paper in my hands for a very long time. I was legit. Philip Niles wasn’t tricking me, or desperate to fill a roster spot. I might have a long way to go, and I had no idea how to convince the coaches I was a better striker than Diego, but I had made the first cut.

Deep breaths, Leo. One day at a time.

I lay on my back on my bed, exhausted from the long day in London, not to mention the rest of the week. Before I knew it, my eyes had closed, and I fell asleep wondering what challenges Week Two would bring.
